Resistance to Change

# How do you manage resistance to organizational change?

Resistance to change is a normal, expected human response, not a sign of failure, and managing it starts with understanding why people resist rather than trying to override it. The most reliable lever is active, visible leadership: McKinsey’s research finds that when senior leaders role-model the change themselves, transformations are several times more likely to succeed. Pairing engaged leaders with clear communication and early involvement is what turns resistance into adoption.

The basics

## Why do people resist organizational change?

Resistance to change is a normal, expected human response, not a sign that something has gone wrong. People resist when change threatens their competence, control, or security, when the reasons are not clear, or when past change left them skeptical.

Managing it starts with understanding *why* people resist rather than trying to override it. Treated as information, resistance often points straight at the real problems worth fixing.

Leadership

## What is leadership’s role in overcoming resistance?

The most reliable lever against resistance is active, visible sponsorship. Leaders who stay engaged, aligned, and visible steady people through change; leaders who disengage leave a vacuum that resistance fills.

5.3×

When senior leaders **role-model the behaviour change** they are asking of their people, transformations are 5.3 times more likely to succeed. That makes visible, engaged leadership the first place to look when resistance builds.

Early signs

## What are the early signs of resistance?

Resistance is far cheaper to manage early. These are the signals that it is building, manageable now, entrenched later.

### Quiet reversion

People drift back to old ways or build workarounds rather than adopt the new one.

### Objection-shaped questions

A rise in questions that are really objections signals concern that is not being addressed.

### Missed adoption milestones

Uptake lags the plan even though the solution is in place and available.

### “We tried this before”

Skepticism rooted in past change that never fully landed dampens the next one.

How we help

## How do you reduce resistance and turn it into engagement?

Grounded in **Balanced Change™**, Levvel works the people side deliberately, engaging concerns rather than overriding them, and involving people early so they help build the change instead of bracing against it. [ACMP’s Standard for Change Management](https://www.acmpglobal.org/page/the_standard) reinforces structured stakeholder engagement as core practice.

Step 1

### Understand the why

Surface the real concern behind the resistance before responding to it.

Step 2

### Engage, don’t override

Involve people early, align sponsors, and act visibly on legitimate concerns.

Step 3

### Reinforce to ownership

Sustain the new way until it becomes normal, involvement turns resistance into support.

Common questions

## Managing resistance to change, FAQ

### Why do people resist organizational change?

Resistance is a normal, expected human response, not a sign of failure. People resist when change threatens their sense of competence, control, or security, when the reasons are not clear, or when past changes left them skeptical. Understanding the why is the starting point for managing it.

### What are the early signs of resistance?

Watch for disengagement, workarounds and quiet reversion to old ways, a rise in questions framed as objections, missed adoption milestones, and “we tried this before” sentiment. Caught early, these are manageable; ignored, they harden into entrenched opposition.

### How do you reduce resistance before it starts?

Involve people early, communicate the why clearly and repeatedly, and equip leaders to engage their teams before the change lands. Resistance is far cheaper to prevent than to unwind, and early involvement converts would-be resisters into contributors.

### What is leadership’s role in overcoming resistance?

It is the single most important factor. McKinsey’s research finds that transformations are 5.3 times more likely to succeed when senior leaders role-model the change themselves, so visible, aligned, engaged leadership is the strongest lever for reducing resistance.

### How do you handle persistent or active resistance?

Engage it rather than override it: understand the specific concern behind the resistance, address legitimate issues honestly, and use aligned sponsors and respected peers to influence rather than mandate. Resistance treated as information often surfaces real problems worth fixing.

### How do you turn resistance into engagement?

Give people a genuine role in shaping the change, act visibly on the feedback they raise, and reinforce the new way until it becomes normal. People support what they help build, and involvement is the most reliable route from resistance to ownership.
